The Kiara College Agricultural Awareness Program has been running for a number of years with funding from the Agriculture Education section of the Department of Education.
The program provides unique learning opportunities within the metropolitan area that engages students (pre-primary to year 6) in agriculture through participation in programs involving an excursion/s to the Kiara farm. Program activities are linked to farm operations and focus on engaging and generating student interest in agriculture and are mapped back to the Australian curriculum.
Programs have a Food and Fibre focus, connecting “Paddock to Plate” and “Paddock to Wardrobe” with a range of activities including:
- Hands on exploration of sheep production examining sheep, lambs* and handling wool
- Hands on exploration of poultry production examining different breeds, chicks and egg production
- Hands on exploration of the dairy industry including hand milking*
- Exploration of horticulture and crop production
- Exploration of farm operations
Changes to the Program in 2019
Following the loss of program funding in 2019, Kiara College made the decision to continue running the Agricultural Awareness Program at a smaller scale that fits within Kiara College’s existing resources. As a priority the program is currently targeting bookings from government primary schools local to Kiara College but other non-local primary schools are encouraged to enquire about excursion availability. For information on the current program please refer to the flyer which can be downloaded on this page. You can also contact Tim Grubba, the Kiara College Agriculture Awareness Program Coordinator: Mobile Phone: 0439 926 759 Email: Timothy.Grubba@education.wa.edu.au
Tim Grubba is available to meet up with any interested teachers to discuss the program and identify any requirements that they have for this year and how the Program may assist them.
Groups are capped at 60 students to maintain safety and a hands on experience. Larger groups can be accommodated through multiple visits e.g. morning group and afternoon group.
